Make Glue at Home

by Stephanie Gabrych Fraser

Instead of buying glue for those paper, craft, and household projects, why not make your own? It's quick, easy, inexpensive and contains ingredients you already have in your own kitchen or can buy in your local stores.

Flour Paste (general purpose): Add 1/4 cup of cold water to 1/4 cup wheat flour in a saucepan and whisk until mixture is perfectly smooth. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of powered alum, then add 3/4 cup hot water. Place mixture over medium heat and stir constantly until it comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from heat. And 3 drops of oil of cloves or camphor (adding either one of these oils discourages insects), stir well. Allow paste to cool before using. Store tightly sealed (emptied, clean baby food jars are ideal containers). Yield: about 1 cup.

Variation: This formula may be halved or multiplied, as desired; make sure saucepan is large enough if multiplying.

Notes: Buy alum (ammonium aluminum sulphate) in the pickling and canning section of supermarkets. Oils of clove or camphor are available at pharmacies, health food stores, and herb shops.

Flour paste for children to use (for paper projects): Mix 1/4 cup wheat flour and enough water to make a smooth paste. Use immediately. Multiply recipe for more paste. Yield: about 1/4 cup.
