The efforts of local youth to improve the environment were recognized April 26th at the PERC-Arbour Environmental Youth Awards reception.
The reception is organized annually to thank young people and encourage them to continue keeping their community green. Organized entirely by volunteers, the event included an address by local environmental activist Ann Coffey, honorary patron for the 2001 reception. In her remarks to the winners she congratulated them and encouraged them to be both persistent and hopeful as they continue their quest to create community environmental improvements.
The Youth Awards are sponsored by the Peace and Environment Resource Centre and Arbour Environmental Shoppe.
The award winners, all under 25 years of age, were presented with a number of gifts, including packages of wild seeds. They were entertained by musical performers provided by the Folklore Centre.
This year's winners included David Beckett Padbury, a volunteer with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Amanda Kramer, who has worked towards creating a greater interest in environmental studies at Greenbank Middle School, the students at St. Bernard School, who are implementing creative ways to reduce waste, Adam Sommerfeld, a green party candidate in the recent federal election, Bethany Or, Bonnie Fraser and Sarah Buchanan, members of the environmental club at Sir Robert Borden High School, Marcus Watson, from PERC's Fundraising Committee, and James Falt and David Haberl, the founding members of the Lakeview Community Club.
Award nominations and volunteers are being sought for next year's reception. For more information visit PERC's website or call Robert Bigras at 770-5853.
