In March the Peace and Environment Resource Centre held a reception to honour young people who make positive contributions to the environment. The following profile is part of a series introducing readers to the winners of the 2003 Arbour Environmental Youth Awards.

Florence Lamarche, one of the winners, is a 10-year-old student at L'école Franco Jeunesse. She started her environmental work at the age of eight when she saw the deforestation of an area near her family's cottage.

Deciding that she needed to encourage young people to care for their environment, Florence set up an interactive website, www.sauvonslanature. Through this link, 80 young people have joined an environmental club where members vow to take positive action in keeping their community green.

Florence was also chosen to be one of the keynote speakers at an international youth environment conference held in Victoria, B.C.

Florence said she was very pleased to receive an Arbour award, as it gave her the chance to meet more people who share her beliefs.

For more information about the Arbour Environmental Youth Awards, or to nominate someone for an award, contact Robert Bigras at 770-5853. Nominations are open to all individuals and groups in the National Capital region. All winners must be under 25 years of age.

Robert Bigras is coordinator of the Arbour Environmental Youth Awards.
