Look for a write-up on this special event in the next PEN!

The Peace and Environment Resource Centre is hosting a volunteer appreciation event, PERCshop, and special announcement to celebrate PERC and PEN projects over the past three years.  Distinguished guests will be on hand to formally congratulate the organization on receiving a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in support of the PERC website, E-PEN, and E-Resource Library projects.

Rob Danforth of Canadian Organic Growers, will facilitate a workshop on container gardening using organic herbs and vegetables. Rob is an experienced gardener and workshop instructor with a wealth of knowledge on organic gardening and growing food in small spaces. Participants will leave with the beginnings of their very own organic container garden and the knowledge of what to do next. More about our workshop facilitator.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., in the basement of St Giles Presbyterian Church, 174 First Avenue, Ottawa.  (please use wheelchair accessible entrance off First Ave) Buses # 1 and 7 go past St Giles. Street parking only.

Ghosts of a Nuclear Graveyard

by Hugh Kruzel

"The use of atomic energy has been described quite accurately as the equivalent of living in an apartment without a toilet." (from "Exposure: Victims of Radiation Speak Out," The Chugoku Newspaper, 1992)

What is the DGR? It is the insanity of burying nuclear waste.

Whether on the shores of Lake Huron or in desert-like conditions of New Mexico, out-of-sight must not be the temporary solution for a compounding mistake. The DGR may have multiple meanings (Dangerous Goods Regulations is close but not the right one) but here it is the Deep Geological Repository. At best these warehouses will be a band-aid to a wound that will fester and eventually weep.

The nuclear energy and waste industry loves using acronyms. OPG (Ontario Power Generation) and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) are hoping someone will say yes to hosting a high level nuclear waste storage site. They would not use the words "Dangerous" or "Storage" when "Management" sounds so much more benign.
