The PERC wishes to thank Rob Danforth of Canadian Organic Growers for the excellent facilitation he provided for our organic container gardening workshop on the afternoon of Saturday, March 2nd, 2013.

Rob has an impressive background in growing organically and teaching others how to do the same:

He is an experienced vegetable/herb gardener:  

  • Backyard plots
  • Gloucester Allotment Gardens

  • Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard  garden
  • Personal container gardens (indoors & outdoors)
  • SOG container gardens
  • Workshop Instructor in vegetable/herb gardening for COG OSO (containers, raised beds, & in-ground gardens)
  • Executive member of Jardins Arrowsmith Thyme-less Gardens Association (JATGA)
  • Long time Volunteer with the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard (GEFC)
  • Contributor of fresh vegetables to the GEFC and to the Cumberland food cupboard
  • Past manager of the GEFC garden and the JATGA demonstration garden
  • Past Coordinator of high school student volunteers for JATGA Gardens.
  • Retired High School Teacher (still registered as an Ontario Certified Teacher)

Update on Neonicotinoid Ban

As the summer ends we can say with certainty that it was not a good one for beekeepers. According to a press release from the Ontario Beekeepers Association Ontario, beekeepers lost 58% of their bees last winter. That's more than three times the average for the rest of Canada.

The debate on whether to ban neonicotinoids, which have been found to be harmful to bees, is well underway and has made great progress in the past months. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food has announced a plan to introduce a licensing system in order to restrict the use of neonicotinoid pesticides. The proposed licensing system is aimed to be implemented for the 2015 growing season and will help to ensure that only farmers who truly need neonicotinoids are the ones that have a right to use them.
