Hello PERC Volunteer! Elaine Gibson: reflecting on her experience

by Steffan Hammonds
Elaine became actively associated with the Peace and Environment Resource Centre in 2012. She was asked if she would like to be a board member and she accepted the role.
Elaine has been aware of the PERC for a good part of its 30 years, while she was working as a researcher for an NDP MP. Both peace and the environment were important issues then.
Elaine sees PERC as a great resource for reaching out to other environmental NGOs. She loves the grassroots feel of PERC.
Elaine came to Ottawa from Manitoba in 1981 to work for the Churchill MP and stayed on Parliament Hill for the next 12 years. She followed that up with a six-year involvement with the Region of Ottawa Carleton/ City of Ottawa, where her job involved internal environmental initiatives. She has since started her own business, Aurora Environmental Consulting, and has taken a variety of contracts, including the Ottawa Eco-Stewardship Fair for three years and coordinator of Earth Day Ottawa for several years.
Elaine's volunteer position at PERC is as a member of the Board of Directors. She started as the treasurer and then became the Chair. She will now be Past Chair.
Other volunteer positions Elaine is or has been involved with include three Ecology Ottawa Galas, Board Member of Sustainable Eastern Ontario, and the National Capital Environmental NGO Network.
Elaine is embarking on a new adventure: she is moving to Calgary. She is looking forward to working with the new NDP government in some capacity, either paid or as a volunteer.
Among her hobbies, Elaine includes folk music, volunteering with the Spirit of Rasputin's concert series, being politically active and volunteering at the annual Ten Thousand Villages Sale.
Elaine is really encouraged by the steps forward PERC has made over the past year. PERC has developed valuable partnerships which have guaranteed PEN issues for some time into the future. Elaine is also happy to see PERC has new people with new energy taking new roles. She is very appreciative of the role that Diana Brushey has played as coordinator. Diana has moved PERC through some tough times.
Elaine would like to say that she is highly appreciative of all the people she has worked with at PERC.
